IMPSAT Project

Nortel was requested to submit a proposal for the design and implementation for the IMPSAT 2000 network in Argentina and Brazil. Nortel recommended an IP-based network for the IMPSAT 2000 network using ATM as the underlying layer 2 protocol. Nortel recognized the importance to IMPSAT of the ability to provide IP connectivity to its client base; Nortel's use of Voice over IP for IMPSAT voice telephony demonstrated commitment to IP. While it is clear that IP is the appropriate network layer protocol (layer 3), IMPSAT has two options for the transport layer protocol (layer 2). The choices are point-to-point protocol (PPP) or ATM. The key variables for this decision are the service portfolio offering and service level reliability requirements.
